Athens, Texas is Haunted

The Devil, Ghost Monkeys, and Rituals

About an hour outside Dallas is the thriving town of Athens, Texas. There are several wineries that you can tour and have a nice glass of merlot. But just ask your tour guide about Fuller Park and see what they have to say.

In 1961 a circus train derailed at Thunder Bridge in Athens. A troop of monkeys escaped, killing their handlers, and fled into the woods. As odd as that sounds, it was just the beginning of this ghost story.

Legend tells of a man, Rev. Medford Fuller, who captured the monkeys, placing them in iron cages that are still there to this day. He supposedly performed unholy rituals using them to connect to the devil.

All of this happened on land that was reserved as the First Baptist Church campgrounds for youth groups in the area. Having children around became a focus for Fuller. As he grew older, it became obvious that he would perish without heirs. And that’s where the rituals came in. Dark prayers and sacrifices took place in the night.

Rumors are that the howls and the chittering of the dead monkeys can be heard between midnight and 1:00 am on the evening of a new moon.
